Sleeping for only four hours last night really messed up my day. I went out this morning and walked to the mailbox to mail some cards. It was like pulling teeth to force myself into my clothes and out the door, but it was pleasant to be out in the fresh air, once the chill wore off. A cloudy damp day in November in Michigan is very quiet. The sky bestows silence. Oaks and hickories are starting to look tattered, but they still hold bright leaves against a grey sky.

I missed the Black Lives Matter demo this month. I wanted to be home so the Sparrowhawk could check in, if he wanted to, after his meeting with Evil J this morning. He had back to back meetings, so it took him longer to call, and by then it was too late for me to rush off downtown. Evil J is apparently fine with the severance arrangements as they are. It seems that, once he gets his own way, he loses interest in the process--more evidence of his managerial ineptitude. (The severance contract also says the Sparrowhawk can't "disparage" his former employers. But hey, I never worked for those bozos.)

I had encouraged the Sparrowhawk to let Evil J know that he was not happy with the way things were handled--in a calm appropriate manner, of course. I was quite proud of him that he decided he would do it. I didn't really expect much from Evil J, but I thought it was possible that he would at least pretend to apologize, and even if he didn't, I thought it might give the Sparrowhawk some peace of mind to have had his say. Sure enough, Evil J issued a semi-pology or fauxpology in which he admitted to having made some mistaken assumptions--according to him, he just assumed that of course the Sparrowhawk would realize that severance pay was an option. Well, no, dumbass--not if you don't mention it. Apparently he did the same thing to another employee, too: reassigned all of her staff, then left her to twist in the wind without mentioning what might happen next. This would seem to indicate either that he makes the same mistakes repeatedly, or that it was a deliberate strategy and not a mistake. We'll never know. However, he did say he was "sorry"--even though he was only sorry that someone (probably not him) made a "mistake"--and he also said that he had a lot of respect for the Sparrowhawk and had learned a lot from him. (Though not enough, she said meanly.) It's really about the best one could expect from a guy like that. The important thing is for the Sparrowhawk to feel better, and he says he does, so mission accomplished.

I then had to take a nap, and slept like the dead for two hours. I dreamed I was sleeping, and kept trying to wake up, but couldn't. Not even in a dream. So that really messed up my schedule, and now I'm behind on my NaNo count, on the very first day! I did write 600 words of a new opening for the WIP.
