ismoRestless, uncertain weather yesterday, with fitful gusty winds unrolling a blanket of clouds across the sky. Last night, we had thunder and rain as the cold front arrived and the temperature dropped. It was actually COLD this morning when I opened the door--39 degrees. This will take a bit of getting used to. I didn't really get out of the house today, although I poked my head out the door and stepped out onto the porch roof to see the neighbors behind us building a big wooden fence. I wonder if it will intimidate the deer and stop them from coming through the neighbor's yard and into mine! That would be nice.
I went too far down the rabbit hole of the past this morning. It made me sad, and I wasn't feeling great to begin with. The Sparrowhawk and I both had kind of a down day. I also went too far down the rabbit hole of Charles Williams, the "Third Inkling," as the bio of that name calls him. The Sparrowhawk had wondered idly what Williams' childhood wounding was, given that Tolkien lost both his parents, and Lewis lost his mother and was abused at school. I looked it up and found that Williams basically suffered from a Victorian class structure accompanied by fairly severe poverty and the threat of actual destitution. Also, he had measles at five, and both his sight and hearing were seriously affected. He had some kind of neurological issue as well, which made him shaky and badly coordinated. And as if that weren't enough, he had intestinal tuberculosis from drinking cheap, unpasteurized milk. It scarred him internally, leading to lifelong difficulties and causing his relatively early death. Well then. That does account for a lot.
Neither one of us felt like cooking, so we pursued a previous resolution to deal with mystery items in the freezer. The first container proved to be some bean and hambone soup from the last time we had ham. When thawed, it was still delicious. Another container held something of a appley nature. I defrosted it and found it was a single serving of apple crisp, which we shared. Two containers down--progress!
