ScreechingCoot of Bliss
May. 9th, 2021 10:59 pmIt's kind of a bummer that May is now the month when my mother died. Mother's Day two years ago was the last one when I actually had a mother. I don't even remember what we did last year. Covid, blah. Ah well--it had to be some month or other. Perhaps I will get over it in ten years or so. I sent Queenie the picture of our mother that I put up on Facebook, because Queenie doesn't do Facebook, and she texted back "Don't be sad," so I know she was feeling it too. However, we both have such outstanding children that we can be the moms now and not be at all sad about that. Tron Zoomed with us, so we got to see her lovely face as well as hear her voice. She sent me a card and a little package, so I opened it while we were talking, and found a book that looks delightful, "Why We Swim," by Bonnie Tsui. It's about people spending time in the water in various ways in many places around the world. Swimming is one of my favorite things ever, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
Then the Sparrowhawk fixed me breakfast/lunch: bacon, french pastry, strawberries, coffee. Yum! I mostly ate it with my fingers. I had a Zoom with Moonmoth and the Nonesuch--not for Mother's Day but just on general principles--during which we all had a drink or two. The Nonesuch started it with peppermint schnapps in his mocha. Then the Sparrowhawk brought me the remnants of a bottle of Prosecco, and Moonmoth had a couple of shots of gin. After that, just to confuse the cuisines completely, the Sparrowhawk and I dined on sushi and pho. I love pho--it is so restorative and tasty.
A gloomy morning had turned into a pleasant evening, as the clouds broke up and the westering sun gleamed through. We went out for a sorely needed walk in the beautiful evening light. The kids sent me a lovely bouquet with all kinds of flowers in it--roses, gerbera, carnations, snapdragons, ferns and pine--sort of a chef's choice of flowers! And the newly-budding trees against the sky are like a bouquet of different shades and textures, too, so the whole world is a floral arrangement right now. When we got home, the other three kids called, one right after the other. So happy--and Raptor also stopped by to say hi on his way--supposedly--to bed. Also, the Diva sent me an intriguing large package that turned out to contain a pair of yellow wellies IN MY SIZE! So awesome! Apparently a friend's mother, for whom the Diva does occasional house cleaning and chores, bought them, decided they didn't fit, and gave them to the Diva. They didn't fit her either, so she sent them on to me, and they are perfect. No one could possibly be sad with their own pair of yellow boots for gardening and splashing through puddles.

Date: 2021-05-10 11:54 am (UTC)Mother's Day ads are the worst - especially the ones that try to guilt you, like "did you remember to call your mom?" or "why haven't you called your mom yet?" I just want to scream and rage at them, because it's not only insensitive, it's cruel. I usually stay off social media on the parental holidays if I can. Yesterday, though, even with the internet turned off, my laptop felt obligated to tell me what day it was. I am going to try and turn off the holiday alerts.

I adored Why We Swim -- there was a tinge of inspo-porn in the beginning but that was cleared out by a stiff breeze in SF bay.
