Well. That was a day. I made a mad dash to the grocery store this morning. En route I changed my mind from cooking a delicious hot meal to the notion that a cold, pre-roasted chicken cut up, plus the rolls and cole slaw that would come with it if I used the special coupon available, would be equally acceptable on a hot day, and whole heck of a lot less work. I dashed home in time to be only slightly late for what we thought was a scheduled Zoom call. It turned out the people on the other end did not think there was such a call, which turned out to be really good because I scarfed a few bites of food and had a cup of tea before starting to make potato salad and wash lettuce for green salad. Because, you know, even if I uncomplicate a meal, I can't COMPLETELY uncomplicate it. (Hmm, does this sound like my problem with plots and writing, as well? Why yes, it does!)

Nebraska texted around 2 to say they were on the way. By 3:30, I was sorta kinda ready but then he texted again to say that actually they were back at Wol's house. They'd been 20 minutes out when Wol checked his blood sugar. It was 455. And he hadn't brought his insulin. So they went back home. Nebraska wasn't sure they'd make it here at all. But about 4, after they'd both fallen asleep briefly, they set out again, and got here about 6. I hustled all of the above plus cheeses, charcuterie, pickles etc. onto the table. It was much better that everything was cold and ready to go. They stayed until after 10, which was a bit late for us. Wol is in horrible shape all around, I fear. This may have been his last out of town trip. So it was good to see him but also sad. We are pretty tired. However, we have plenty of no-prep food ready for the next couple of days.

I'm glad you got to see your friend.

It's definitely the time of year for cold foods. I finished a cantaloupe on Thursday and already want another watermelon.
