HermitShell of Flourish
Aug. 25th, 2021 10:24 pmSomething happened to my brain chemicals. Possibly they got curdled because it's too hot outside, so I don't go out. Thus I'm stuck in my house even more than I'm stuck because COVID. One excuse is as good as another, I suppose . . . . A couple of days ago, the Sparrowhawk and I did some weeding. Then we were too hot and tired and went back inside. His gym has been canceled twice because Coach's husband had a knee replacement and needs care. Yesterday, I created a small horizontal area that was empty and dust-free. I also recycled some printouts of things I didn't need any more. That was about it. Then I stayed up too late reading (finally) Jo Walton's Or What You Will. It made me really want to go to Florence. I wonder if I ever will. I wish I could give a perceptive, insightful review of it, but I'm not in the mood. It's a poignant take on the power of story. Perhaps too poignant for me right now. It's also a wonderfully affectionate and erudite mash-up of "The Tempest," "Twelfth Night," and the school of Ficino. I loved all the little Easter eggs embroidered into it.
Today I was going to do something or other, but instead I was on the phone for quite awhile. First with my friend in MN, who has many problems. Then it was the Diva, who called because she was sitting in a public park waiting for her son, our dearest Muffinhead, to have surgery because he fell and broke his elbow. His girlfriend was with him when the Diva arrived after a 3-hour drive, and the hospital will only let one person in, because COVID. Muffinhead was skateboarding to class when he encountered an obstacle that had been placed across the sidewalk without any warning or barricade, and thus he fell. At least he was wearing a helmet so it's not his poor head they're operating on. The Diva let me know he was out of recovery and at home with his girlfriend to look after him, as she was getting on the freeway to go back home. I'm very grateful to her for calling me. It made me feel I was at least doing SOMETHING of a mom-ish nature.
We had just sent off a gift to Muffinhead to help him out with starting the new year at college. And we sent a gift to my brother's pregnant offspring and their husband, for the new baby. Their baby party in the park was canceled because COVID. Sigh. Who coulda seen THAT coming . . . . We have sent various other donations to people we know as well. It is a time of trouble and need.
