ismoIt was a very sparkly day. I sallied forth to buy groceries: blue sky, fresh, non-humid air, clouds brilliantly illuminated, Barber string quartet on the car radio. Who could ask for more. It was old people's discount day, so there were a lot of old people in the store, and I noticed they were mostly wearing masks, so I put mine on as well. There's a checker who always looked stressed-out, but once I started chatting with her, she turned out to be very friendly. Today she asked if I wanted paper or plastic, and then suddenly added, "or burlap, or silk . . . or what else could I come up with? Dotted swiss? Seersucker?" I said I'd take silk, and then make dresses out of them when I got them home. I asked if she remembered that eyelet material that looked sort of like lace, and she did. Then we started talking about our mothers and their sewing machines, and our own sewing activities when we were young. Her face softened and her eyes lit up, and she said, "That's a happy memory!" So we both got a little break in the middle of the checkout line.
We signed Raptor's birthday card, and I decked it out with stamps (a dragon, and Superman) and fancy stickers, and we sent it off--late as usual. Tomorrow he will be TEN! Double digits--a momentous occasion. We sent him clothes--in the form of a gift card his parents can use to get what he needs--and art supplies: a big pack of gel pens, paint brushes, and sketchbooks.
I made nachos for dinner, with cheese and taco-flavored beef and beans, and sides of salsa, guac, and sour cream, and chopped lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. I made too many nachos for two older people, one of whom has an easily offended tummy. It's too bad Tron and the Lumberjack weren't here. They would have enjoyed finishing off the lot. If they were here, I would have added some jalapenos, but in the end, I left them out. As an old German friend of my parents used to say, "Maybe we better don't."
