I woke up in the pre-dawn hours, and heard the sound of rain--a delightful sound. It was not SO delightful when, later in the morning, it suddenly became dark as night again, and then unleashed a torrential downpour! But it's actually good, because we needed the rain and it's been a long time since we had one of those summer thunderstorms.

I talked to Queenie. She still doesn't have the results of her cardiac MRI. They put her in the machine for an hour and a half. She does have a lot of anxiety about enclosed spaces like that, and asked for a sedative. They said all they could do for her is offer aromatherapy--a pretty stupid suggestion for someone with covid-related anosmia. She bailed after an hour, so she isn't sure they got all the pix they wanted. While I was on the phone with her. I got another call, from my cousin in California. I thought he was probably calling from his car as he drove around the Bay area for work, which is what he usually does. But when I called back, he picked up right away, and I learned that he has pancreatic cancer and has gone into hospice. They had just brought him a meal, and then the nurse was coming, so he said he'd call me back. He hasn't yet, so that's all I know. This was a sad shock. I felt bad that I had not kept up with him better. I thought of him often this year, but always thought there was time . . . . This is how we think. And then the time runs out.

The Sparrowhawk had a pretty good birthday. I made this cake for him: Chocolate Raspberry Cake. It is, as advertised, moist and delicious. I used some home-style blackberry jam from Keweenaw Kitchen instead of raspberry, because I think that blackberry and chocolate go together very well. We had a great Zoom with all of the kids.
