Oct. 1st, 2021 08:32 pmI'm too tired--not enough sleep. I've been awake for sunrise a couple of times recently, so I've seen how far south the sun has gone already. It's a bit ominous in spite of the still mild, blandishing weather. No blogging because I was tired and various things made me sad. Yesterday we had the last of our social engagements for the week--or what we thought was the last, anyway. It was the couple that the Sparrowhawk had been introduced to by a friend from his former work place. This couple recently moved into her neighborhood. The man has Parkinson's, so she thought he naturally would like to be pals with the Sparrowhawk. My problem with this is that I don't really enjoy meeting people with whom I have nothing in common other than having the same problem. However, I buckled up and did my best to be social. I spent most of my time chatting with the woman. She has the same name as two other friends--it's uncanny--so I'll just call her Type-A, which was her self-description. She had dressed up for the occasion in a nice dress, heels, and a fancy lace-patterned shawl. I THOUGHT I had dressed up, because I put on a clean polo shirt that didn't have anything Stargate on it, one of my better pairs of pants, and some earrings. I was barefoot. This woman's career was designing duty-free shops, and she had lived in Hong Kong and Australia. She was also one of the few people I've met who has been on Saipan. She's quite interesting. It was somewhat distracting that her blood sugar monitor kept going off and then she'd have to program herself some more insulin.
It remains to be seen if we will have some type of relationship. She's the kind of person who is very busy and does things all the time, and I'm not sure she will like me when she realizes that much of my activity takes place inside my head. Her husband's mobility issues are much worse than the Sparrowhawk's, and he needs a walker. Type-A brightly suggested that maybe the four of us could use their electric bikes that they just got and go for a ride. My thought: going for a bike ride with two people with Parkinson's and one person with not very well controlled diabetes, two of whom I've just met, is a lot of responsibility and not my idea of fun! I tried to demur in a politic fashion. She also thought maybe her husband could ride one of those ride-share scooters downtown. I do not know her well enough to say "What are you NUTS??" I suggested they might like to try that at home first because it's not as easy as it looks. Debbie Downer, here. Surprisingly enough, she seemed to find some benefit in talking to me, so maybe we'll get together again.
I got the trip report from my dear bro about our cousin, plus pictures. I love Mr. Science for doing this, and I was very grateful to hear the details, but it made me sad in so many ways.
Getting up too early enabled me to run to the grocery store and buy lots of things--half price sweet rolls for the Sparrowhawk, my chicken deal whereby I got a roast chicken for 4.99 with the purchase of cole slaw and Hawaiian rolls, and my 50 cents off per gallon gas coupon. Etc. I sort of whizz-cleaned parts of the refrigerator to fit it all in, and cooked up some veggies that were languishing because I hadn't been feeling well. We had a nice Zoom with Deb and the Prussian in which we saw for ourselves that the Prussian is home safe and sound (and still getting the good drugs) and viewed from afar the usual and always infuriating struggle to actually obtain the promised medical assistance.
Then I went out in the back yard to have my usual tea and contemplate doing something. I was reading some pretty bad Dejah Thoris comics that had been provided to me, and texting with the Nonesuch when I learned that not only was Mr. Dr. Nurse coming to give the Sparrowhawk his piano lesson, but Dr. Nurse herself was coming along. So I went in and collected her, gave her some ice water with lemon, and took her into the back yard to enjoy the lovely day. It was then that she gave me the news! After a year of wishing and hoping, she's pregnant and will be having the baby in May! Well! That certainly brightened up the day. We are overjoyed, and it was extra sweet of her to come and tell us the news in person. After this, the Duchess thought she'd better tell the whole clan, so there was texting with the sibs, and joy was unconfined, especially when Mr. Science chimed in to say that his non-binary child is in labor with THEIR baby, so there will be another cousin very soon now. Also soon, I will give that sleep thing another try . . . .
