WildTurkey of Ember
Nov. 22nd, 2021 10:33 pmOops. It keeps getting late again, and I realize I forgot to blog. Not that anything of great moment ever happens. Both the Sparrowhawk and I were awake too long in the middle of the night, but amusingly, at alternating times, so I didn't get up because I didn't want to wake him, and then after I had gone to sleep finally, he woke up, but didn't get up because he didn't want to wake me! We couldn't catch up by rising late, because he had to see the dermatologist at 11, and I was going to see Madame at 11 also, to make up for the visit we missed last week. We left early, and I got off at the bookstore cafe while he continued on to the doctor's office. I had a pretty nice time with Madame. It turned out that I was her guinea pig for testing her new hearing aids. She hadn't seen anyone all weekend to talk to, so she hadn't been able to practice. There are still a few kinks in the system. I ventured to have a cup of soup, which was fairly agreeable. For supper, I was craving vegetables, so I roasted some sweet potatoes and beets, and steamed the green beans. I didn't feel like trying the beets yet, but potatoes and beans were delicious.
While the Sparrowhawk was off at the gym, I continued my quixotic quest through my mother's old journals. Yesterday, I started out typing up a chronology of events that I thought were interesting from the time of our childhood. I had been thinking maybe I'd burn the remnants after that. That was probably why I couldn't sleep last night . . . but today, I think I won't. There are too many poignant and/or ridiculous moments detailed therein that still make me smile, in among the things that make me go WTF?! It's a wonder we all survived, but it was quite an adventure. I'm quite impressed with myself after reading that at age 10, I was ironing my own dress before school, as it had "somehow been crumpled up with the dress-ups." Gee, wonder how that happened . . . . I had a chat with Queenie, who is blissfully embedded with both her girls in a mountain cabin for Thanksgiving, and told her about a couple of these incidents. It's nice to be able to talk to probably the only person in the world who could possibly understand! I showed Madame a picture of the outfit I'm going to wear to the wedding. She asked if my sisters looked like me, and I explained that they look more like our mother--slender and more classically beautiful--as does our brother. I showed her a couple of pictures on my phone, and she did a double-take and said, "Are you sure you belong in this family?" Ha! That's always been the question . . . but yes, if one sees us all together, we have our similarities.
My tights from WeLoveColors came in the mail, finally! They are real proper tights, not just opaque hose. The colors are very nice, and they fit well and are warmer and more durable than the abominable pantyhose. Of course, they're still an exasperating fiddle to get ON. But the array of possible colors is enchanting, and I'll probably order some more. Another package came from the Sparrowhawk's friend whom we visited on the way back from seeing Deb and the Prussian. She and her husband have been unpacking some boxes they had in storage. They discovered two hardcover Tarzan books--Tarzan the Terrible and The Son of Tarzan, and decided to send them to me, since I mentioned I was working on an Edgar Rice Burroughs story. Honestly, although the first Tarzan book was my first introduction to ERB, it's never been something I pursued, the whole concept being somewhat problematic to say the least. But I appreciate the thought, and my friend the Nonesuch tells me that, in canon, today happens to be Tarzan's official birthday! How fortuitous, indeed.
