It was 67 degrees today!!! The multiple exclamation points indicate my enthusiasm for this gift of delicious balmy weather. We had a lovely St. Patrick's Day. I wanted to see if the bakery had any more of those great day-old loaves. I had considered going there on the way home from lunch with Madame, but by the time I walked her to her car and fetched the book I was going to lend her, I didn't really have time. Besides, it occurred to me that it would be more fun to go there with the Sparrowhawk. So we went out first thing and did that. I obtained another piglet loaf. We brought some coffee and pastries home, and enjoyed them out on the screen porch for the first time this year, after I washed a winter's worth of dust off the vinyl tablecloth.

Then I clothed myself all in green and went around the house in a sprightly mood, humming "Mary Ann Malone" to myself. "She neither paints nor powders, and her figure is all her own/And she can hit that hard/You'd think 'twas the kick of a mule you'd got--/The full of your arms of Irish love/Is Mary Ann Malone." I wrote some actual sentences about Dejah Thoris. My editor still hasn't read my outline, but I figure I may as well start anyway. We made a collaborative effort on dinner--oven roasted corned beef with onions and carrots, and colcannon, which is mashed potatoes mingled with chopped greens, in this case cabbage. The onions and carrots rather interestingly reduced down to a kind of relish, pungently flavored with the drippings and spices of the corned beef. It was really too salty to eat as a vegetable, but as a chutney-like adornment, it was pretty good. I cut off a heel of the bread loaf to see what was in it. It had a tang of rye, and some caraway seeds, so I think it will make some nice sandwiches with the leftover corned beef. We had a fun call from the Nipper who told us more about his genealogical research into our Irish ancestors. It was a great day for the Irish.
