CirrusSoar of Bliss
Jun. 9th, 2022 10:20 pmWell, the kids left for a second and final time this morning. They had stayed one extra day, and we had a laid-back, pleasant time. Okay, maybe the final viewing of "Free Solo" wasn't all that laid-back, as we witnessed Alex Honnold breathtakingly ascending El Capitan. On Tuesday, we'd had a jam-packed day including lunch at a Kurdish cafe, followed by seeing "Top Gun: Maverick" in IMAX with popcorn, followed by dinner at a really good taqueria. As I put it, "Tron and the Lumberjack will view this with an eye to social critique and anti-militarist commentary, whereas the Sparrowhawk and I will be all 'Goshwow! Acrobatic flight maneuvers!' so everyone will be happy."
Today: debriefing with me railing against an unkind fate on various fronts; a bit of grocery shopping to get my 50 cents off per gallon gas coupon; errands; commencement of post-visit laundry; a catch-up Zoom; 500 words more of the adventures of Dejah Thoris. It's something at least, though I admit it is ALMOST entirely about the outfit she decides to wear. It does have some degree of plot relevance. At times, it matters what a princess has on, and since on Barsoom, they wear very little, every detail is important. I can't really picture how a complicated set of straps heavily encrusted with precious stones would be very comfortable, so I tried to invent a harness that would suit convention but also be more wearable. I still wonder how they manage when they sit down, but ours not to question why. . . . (For those unfamiliar with the Edgar Rice Burroughs universe, let me point out that the men have to wear harness that is equally rococo, and moreover has a lot of pointy things hooked up to it, so if anything, they are worse off. It's equal opportunity gem-encrusted semi-nudity. So there is that.)
