Today was not overly full of achievements, but I have been vertical. (Oh great, the Sparrowhawk just set off the smoke alarm while cooking hamburgers. Usually I warn him, as the kitchen fills with smoke, that the alarm is going to go off any minute. La la la, I'll just wait until the Bad Noise stops . . .) Anyway . . . where was I? I checked the lost-luggage-tracking website. It now records what we already know--my bag was loaded on the plane from Basel to Charles de Gaulle in Paris, where it was tagged to be flown to Minneapolis. Still no info on what happened after that. Probably my bag is sitting in a bistro in Montmartre, having taken an Uber into the city and bought itself a new wardrobe. It regrets nothing.

I was still feeling puffy, slow, and debilitated, but it wasn't very hot this morning, so I felt impelled to do some weeding in my garden. I removed a BIG heap of uninvited biomass, and feel better about that. There's more to do, but the day was getting very hot and steamy, so I quit. I'm so happy that everything survived so far. Two of the tomato plants have actual tomatoes on them, ripening, and the other two have flowers. The eggplant has one eggplant the size of my finger, and another little purple bud starting to grow. The cucumbers and squash are flowering exuberantly, though I don't see any fruit yet. The beans are thriving, and the purple pod ones have purple flowers. So it's all good so far. It rained last night, and is supposed to rain again a couple of times, so I hope they'll make it through our next trip without my anxious surveillance.

My most favorite thing about the cruise was just being on the river. On our first day, we were taken from the airport to the dock in Mainz. That afternoon, when everyone had arrived, the boat cast off and began to move, and there we were, moving dreamily down the Rhine! To sit on the top deck and watch the riverbanks in all their changing variety of trees and terrain, birds flying, people walking their dogs or fishing, swans and cormorants, barges passing, was pure joy. Every day, fresh scenery! You wake up in the morning and are somewhere new, as if by magic. That was honestly the best part.
