The Tale of the Missing Bag: When we returned from DC, we stopped again at the baggage service office. No one was there. Another worker told us that the woman who had been working there had been there for 15 hours, and had to go home. We spoke with someone else, but he was unable to help us. This morning, having a bit of free time, I drove back out to the airport to revisit the baggage service office. There's a sign on the door that requests one wait until an agent is free. I waited, because the woman inside was on the phone being yelled at by a customer. I could hear him from the doorway. He seemed quite upset. She was extremely patient and kind. I heard her say, "Yes, I will look for your bag as soon as I get off the phone. No, sir, I can't do that right now, because I am on the phone with you. I will have to call Detroit and Boston, and get back to you. No, sir, I can't do that, BECAUSE I AM ON THE PHONE." I think he believed that his bag was somehow in front of her and she could go and get it. When she hung up, she beckoned me forward. I tried to be super nice to her because I could see that she was not having the easiest day. As soon as she called up my report, she said, "Ah yes, the Charles de Gaulle disaster . . . I am looking for many bags from Air France and KLM!" She assured me that she would do her best, and would call me back in a day or two even if she didn't have any good news. Although she couldn't really do anything for me, I was heartened by contact with an actual human being. I think baggage service must be one of the worst jobs right now!

Several hours later, I got a phone call--oh joy, it was my pal Jennifer from the airport! She said she had just seen my bag! It had arrived from Paris via Minneapolis and would soon be en route to my door! I thanked her profusely, and she said modestly that she really had nothing to do with it. I told that, since she probably got blamed often for things she had nothing to do with, it was only fair that she should get the credit when something went right. THANK YOU, JENNIFER! And a couple of hours after that, my bag actually arrived on my doorstep! I am so happy. I immediately took a look at my lovely art book about the Isenheim Altarpiece, and learned, to my surprise, that the monastery where it resided was a hospice where sick people were cared for, and the altarpiece was created as a healing object. The hope was that it might bring healing to some, and if not, then at least it might bring them consolation by uniting their souls with the heavenly visions that it portrayed. It seems I made a pilgrimage without knowing it, and now my bag has made its pilgrimage home to me.

In other news, I put away laundry, sent out more encouraging texts and whatnot, and wrote another 500+ words. Still no yard work or exercise, but we do what we can.

THANK YOU!
