CloudTumble of Flourish
Aug. 29th, 2022 09:23 pmHoly smokes, I am behind. Well, it's been an exciting and busy week. Saturday, the kids moved into their new apartment. We followed them there--stopping to get lattes and pastries for them at a favorite spot--and helped them unload all their stuff from the pod and take it through a couple of sets of doors and a flight of stairs. They were very strict with us about not carrying furniture. The Sparrowhawk was tasked with setting up their tv and wifi, a role he performed outstandingly, and I was allowed to schlep boxes of books up the steps. I could only carry one at a time, so it was tedious. Tron said the Lumberjack told her I was "a work horse." This is true--it is my joy to DO STUFF. It makes me feel alive. My knees did not give me a hard time, also to my joy.
The Duchess and Duke came over and helped! The Duchess brought lentil soup and a loaf of her bread, which is excellent for toast, and some oatmeal cookies. The Duke was asked to bring a hammer and some nails and screws, in case the bookcases came apart. The Duchess said "You asked the right person." He brought two large tool bags with everything you could possibly need. He assisted the Lumberjack in hauling the two giant bookshelves up the stairs. (I bought these from a woman I knew in Kansas. We took them to Texas, then to Pennsylvania. When we moved here, they wouldn't fit into the house because the ceilings weren't quite tall enough, so they went into storage. The kids took them to DC, and now back to Michigan. So they've been around.) The bookcases wouldn't go through the door. There was not quite enough clearance. Geometry! So the Duke just unscrewed the door and took it down. The bookcases went through like greased lightning, and fit perfectly. Then he put the door back on. I so admire people like that. Meanwhile, the Duchess unpacked most of Tron's kitchen boxes and put the things on shelves. She is the queen of organizing. Tron will no doubt re-arrange them to suit herself, but at least the dishes and glasses are out where she can get them and use them. The kids agreed that next time they move, they're hiring someone. The Lumberjack said, "I'm too old for this." Ha ha. Oh you sweet summer child. You do not yet know the meaning of the word! But I agree. Enough is enough. At some point, it's best to outsource the labor.
After the Duke and Duchess left, we hung out with the kids for a bit, and then drove over to the Duchess's house, where she had kindly invited us to spend the night. We could have driven home, but we were tired. There were no hotel rooms left in town, because it was move-in weekend for the University. And Deb and the Prussian were at their son's house, babysitting their grandchild. We met them in the morning and went to church with them, followed by breakfast at a local diner, and then went home. It was a lot of driving. Shortly after we got home, there was a tempestuous rainstorm. We were happy to be home, but we missed the kids--their youthful joy and energy. It was our great joy and satisfaction to be able to help them start off on this next part of their life.
