Today: Disappointment!! Once again, I unloaded the refrigerator and packed everything left into the coolers. There's less and less food in there, because I don't buy things that need refrigeration. I moved the table to the far side of the dining room to make space for them to get through to the kitchen. They said they'd bring the new one between 2 and 5. Naturally, they arrived at 4, which is not one of the Sparrowhawk's good times of day. A couple of obliging and helpful young men measured all the doors and angles with a measuring tape. Then they brought us the bad news: the refrigerator the Sparrowhawk had ordered was too big and would probably not fit through the door. Even if it did, the doors would not open properly because it would stick out too far. We needed a different size of refrigerator entirely, one built to fit within the confines of the counters that we have--like the one we have now. Oh dear. They commiserated with us and went away, promising to give the measurements to the ordering department and tell them to call us. We don't know if we can get the size we need from them. Alas. We were both quite discouraged after this. The Sparrowhawk blames himself for not measuring correctly, though I don't think he should. I'm just unhappy because I don't really know how I'm going to cope with not having a functional refrigerator for an even more extended period. In theory, I could just use the cooler and pretend I'm camping. This would mean shopping daily, like a European, and I don't see how to fit that into the schedule right now. Ah well. We'll work something out.

The Sparrowhawk was also having trouble putting his new license plate holder--a present from Tron for his birthday--onto the car. He finally took the broken bit from the old one to the hardware store, and they helped him find a new one, and he got it put on. Triumph! In the past few days, we've both thought the car was making a funny sound. On the way home from the hardware store, he pulled into our friendly service garage and asked the guy working there to do him a favor and tell him if it was a funny noise. Yes, the guy said it was indeed a funny noise, probably a bad water pump. He advised not driving long distances. So now we have to make an appointment to get that fixed, too. "Bright and early for the daily races, going nowhere, going nowhere . . . ."

The Sparrowhawk had a really nice day for his birthday yesterday, though, which is what counts. I had to run off and get a haircut in the morning, and then talk to Queenie. After that, we packed up some coffee and treats and went to sit by the small lake. It was a grey day, but without rain, and the clouds were exciting and full of movement, fall clouds impending change. He received many good wishes, calls from the kids, a gift or two, and some cards. For dinner, we had sushi with ramen for him and tempura udon for me, followed by a rewatch of The Fellowship of the Ring.

i so feel you about running as hard as you can and yet still somehow getting further behind.
as long as we can hold onto our wry amusement, i guess we'll be okay.

fingers crossed the fridge sitch resolves easily and soon.
