LeafScape of Leave
Oct. 12th, 2022 09:29 pmI was up and out of the house before sunrise today, for a mammogram at 7:30. This just made me realize how much later sunrise is now than it used to be. The Sparrowhawk nobly got up with me and made me a cup of tea before I had to go. I re-encountered the super fake "Tranquility Room" at the mammogram facility. No, sadly, it is not mocked up to look like a moon landing site. Instead it has some sort of pretend fireplace with globular lightbulbs at different heights within it, some objects of bleached coral, some fake candles, and some FAKE BOOKS!! I took them off the shelf and examined them, and they are nothing but little cardboard boxes with soothing titles. SACRILEGE! They should know that putting fake books in a room designed to tranquilize a writer is not a good move. Everything is pale grey and cream. Yes, it literally is called the Tranquility Room and not the waiting room. It irritated me quite a bit. I sat in the chair in the corner behind the fake potted plant, from which I had a good view of both exits, while being slightly concealed from anyone entering from the hall. Eternal vigilance in the Tranquility Room, baby. Another chapter title for my memoirs. On the one hand, it was not fun to go through the panini machine before sunrise, but on the other hand, it was nice to get it over with early, and it is quiet at that hour.
I had time for a shower and whatnot, including a spirited re-telling of the Book of Tobit to the long-suffering Sparrowhawk, for reasons I forget, before it was time to meet Madame for lunch. She was in fine form and kept me there talking for a very long time. I heard some interesting stories. When I professed myself surprised at how late it was, and said I had to run, she said roguishly "We were having too much fun!" I did tell her several jokes that made her laugh. She was in an upbeat mood because her cochlear implant surgery has been approved for just before Thanksgiving. I hope so much that it enables her to hear again!
When I got home, I found that the Sparrowhawk had figured out how to puree those consarned beans. I cooked them with bacon etc. and they had an absolutely delicious flavor, but they were full of tiny fibers with all the mouthfeel of poky plastic shards. Not palatable no matter what I did. So he pureed them in the blender, and then I pushed them through a sieve, and that removed the fibers. I won't do that again. I'm happy that I'm using my produce and not having to throw it out, but it's a really labor-intensive process to end up with something resembling pea soup. As the Sparrowhawk said, it's very superior pea soup, but still.
It's good that we went for a lovely walk among the golden leaves yesterday, when an anachronistic summery warmth still breathed over the waters. Today the rain started, and then the wind, and I think the rain will just come and go for a few days now. I've reached 43,000 words on the WIP now, so I feel I've got a little bit of momentum going again.
