I was awake for too long in the middle of the night, but managed to go back to sleep by the skin of my teeth. So I'm not completely sleep-deprived. The Sparrowhawk had to drive me to the bookstore to see Madame, because our car was still in the shop, and I'm not allowed to drive the rental car until I present myself in person at the airport and prove I'm me, which we haven't had time to do yet. I had a nice chat with Madame. She was also delighted to see the Sparrowhawk when he came back to get me. He had good news for us, too. The car was ready! So I rode back over to the dealer with him, and then I drove our car to the airport, while he returned the other car, and then I drove him home. I got a little more work done on the book, but that's about all I was able to accomplish due to all the driving around. The funny thing is that they never did figure out why the car wouldn't start. Of course it started for them! But they did replace the fuel pump, which has had a recall on it for nearly three years now. Until now, they've never had the parts to fix it. The technician said that it's possible the fuel pump was the problem, but he couldn't guarantee it. So it remains a mystery.

I lit the red Advent candles while I was working. It was so dark today, and the sun sank so early! It's very extravagant of me to burn candles all the time, but their glowing, flower-like flames add some hope and cheer to the embers of the year. This being December 14, it's been over 19,000 days that we've been together. The Sparrowhawk knows exactly how many, since he is good with numbers. And yet each day is still precious. He gave me a lovely new tea mug from Emma Bridgewater, with a scene of Queen Elizabeth walking in the country in her wellies and scarf, complete with dogs, a pony, several castles, and some bluebells and partridges. We shared some rather tasty California champagne. I see all my Christmas cards waiting hopefully in a neat stack. Heaven only knows who is going to write them all out and send them! Perhaps some future me who is better organized and never has a cold or car trouble. . . .
