FallDone of Ember
Dec. 17th, 2022 08:42 pmIt snowed six inches overnight, and has continued to snow heavily all day, so I don't know how much is on the ground now. It was a story book snow, the kind that covers the eaves thickly, making all the houses look like frosted gingerbread houses, and piles like white clouds atop the pine branches. It was no story book to shovel, however, which was the first job we had to do. Our kindly neighbor was out struggling with his snow blower, and made our lives easier by doing the end of the driveway.
We drove gingerly over the slippery streets to the farmers market to look for a Christmas tree. Last year, they had really nice ones for a decent price. This year--none at all! I guess we waited too long. But we got all kinds of other things. We stopped and said hello to our friends the farm ladies, and bought some sausages. I got a nice lot of apples, and a couple of other treats. Everyone warned us the market will be closed for two weeks! So buy lots of things now, was the subtext. We did our best. We made a brief stop at home, and then off to babysit Bird Baby while Dr. Nurse went to see the Nutcracker with her mom, and Dr. Music had a rehearsal. Bird Baby grows by leaps and bounds! She was jolly, and we had a good time. When he came home, Dr. Music said that it was so nice that we lived so close by--and it is. Then we went straight to the garden store to look for a tree there. We found a good one, though for an exorbitant price. And then home . . . .
We were planning to go to church tonight, but we were really too tired and the roads too bad. The Sparrowhawk dropped off our gifts for the angel tree and the food pantry, but he couldn't even get into the parking lot, because the plows hadn't finished yet. I called Madame when we were on the way to the farmers market, because I thought she might still need a tree. She pronounced herself "frazzled" and said she'd like to consult her son first. She didn't get back to me, so we didn't get her one, but perhaps I'll ask her again tomorrow.
