Torpor of Sleet

ismoThis morning, the sun actually rose visibly and shone in through the window. Around here, at this time of year, sunlight is such a precious thing that it makes me feel as if I should be doing something special. As it turned out, our activities were not the kind of special thing I had in mind, but I think we filled our quota of gold stars for the day. I had already told Madame I would come and visit. Then Dr. Nurse asked if we could watch Bird Baby for a couple of hours--sadly, right at the time I usually see Madame. However, the Sparrowhawk was available if they could pick him up, because I would be using the car. They were happy to do that, so he departed to see Bird Baby.
I called Madame a couple of times just to make sure that she remembered I was coming. I got no answer, until I was already at the cafe about to order. She was delighted to have me come, so I got our usual sandwiches and coffee and dropped over to her house. It turned out she was unusually happy to see me, because she had been afraid I was put out by having to spend so long at the doctor with her last week. Clearly she was quite worried about this, because she brought it up several times. I reassured her repeatedly that I was quite accustomed to doctor's offices and not bothered at all by spending the time. We looked at some brochures for various retirement communities together, but in the end she remained unsure what to do. Her daughter is working on a plan. Madame is worried that if the place is too far out of town, I won't come to see her. I promised that I would--pointing out that I have to, because she owes me so many lunches! I'll have to keep visiting her so I can collect.
