We got home yesterday afternoon, after another successful two days that were more of the same. Again we traversed the city and found our way to the skyway, through Indiana, and so home. It started snowing as we drove, which irritated me because it was not supposed to happen, but we got home before it began to accumulate. I was in time to Zoom with Moonmoth and the Nonesuch. I keep forgetting that now it doesn't get dark until after eight! But in the morning when I woke up, I kept waiting for it to get light again, and it never did. Not for ages.

When it did get light, I had to put on my public pants and quickly clear off the car so the Sparrowhawk could go to his money counting job. I guess we had three or four inches of fluffy but damp snow. It quickly melted away from the pavement. I had a long chat with Queenie. I ran out to the store and picked up a couple of things. I drank tea and thought about writing, but didn't do any. The Sparrowhawk went off to the gym and I worked in a desultory way on some projects. I found my old compendium volume of The Warden and Barchester Towers. I was so happy to see it. I had been afraid that I got rid of it in one of the purges. I know I did give away my paperback set of the Palliser novels but hey, they were just paperbacks. I may have to replace them, though. I only really love the first one, Can You Forgive Her?, and the two Phineas Finn novels. Lizzie Eustace gives me a pain, so I don't care about The Eustace Diamonds, and the Duke's family doesn't really interest me a lot, so The Prime Minister and The Duke's Children are not as involving to me either. However, one must have them all to trace the fates of all the characters. The world of the Pallisers is fundamentally a sad one, anyway. Politics can only become a major theme when community and integrity have already been destroyed. Poor Phineas Finn is a fool to have longed so ardently for an entree to such a world. "All that is solid melts into air," as we are so fond of quoting these days.
