WinterRye of Sleet
Feb. 22nd, 2018 08:56 pmToday it got chilly again--above freezing, but barely. The Sparrowhawk invited me to go for a walk by the lake, something we haven't done in weeks. Ice still covers the lake, but there's a transparent layer of meltwater on top of the ice, so you can't see how thick it is. The ice fishing shacks are all gone. I wouldn't go out on it myself. I did smash up a few panes of thin glassy ice near the shore. They make such a satisfying CRACK and CLINK when they shatter. The Sparrowhawk said he could see my child self emerging as I gleefully kicked the ice. It's true--I used to love doing that when I was little. It had all the joy of smashing things up without the bad consequences and remorse. I rediscovered this joy when I learned to break boards in tae kwon do, too. But if you don't do that just right, you smash up your own metacarpals as well, so ice is better.
I enjoyed being out in the sun again, but the breeze blowing across the ice was unexpectedly cold. It seems to have gotten into my lungs, so after the walk, my chest hurt and I started coughing again. A lot. I had to spend the rest of the day on the couch with the fake-fur blankie again. Ugh I'm SO TIRED of this. After two weeks, I'm still debilitated. I hate to complain, because it seems nearly everyone has been sick this month . . . but I'm going to anyway. Because this is really suboptimal.
We saw Black Panther last night, and loved it. Aside from everything else, it's cinematically beautiful, and grand. But I'll say no more until I'm sure everyone has seen it. It's too good to spoil.
