Tron and the Lumberjack came up for Mothers' Day, and we had a lovely day and a half with them. Yesterday, they arrived with lunch and coffee from their favorite bakery, which we ate while doing the first portion of catching up. They went for a walk to limber up after the drive. Then Tron and I went to the fancy crystals 'n stuff store to see if they had scented oils that she liked, and strolled over to a new tea shop I was curious about. Alas, they had just stopped seating people for tea as we arrived, but I got a look at the place, which seems fabulous enough to revisit, and bought a hefty roll of McVittie's Digestive Biscuits, one of the world's most soothing cookies. They go well with tea. Tron looked through my fat folder of random stickers, which as she put it, is a trip through the past. I keep trying to use them up, but there are some in there that date back to her childhood--sparkly unicorns and such.

We didn't want to bother about trying to go to a restaurant on a weekend that encompassed Mothers' Day and a local college graduation. Instead, we ordered takeout from the Kurdish pizza place and picnicked in the park, by the lake. The breeze from the water was pleasant, the evening was lovely, and when Tron got chilly, she wrapped herself up in the picnic blanket. Eventually, we ambled slowly to the ice cream shop and got our first cones of the year. At home, we watched an episode of "L'Agence," a show about a Parisian family selling real estate to some very wealthy French people. It's a fascinating glimpse into some beautiful architecture--and occasionally some modernist and profoundly silly living arrangements, but oh well, rich people, go figure. Then we played a round of a new game I bought on a whim, "Ransom Notes." It's highly amusing for people who are verbally adept.

This morning, the kids made us a delicious breakfast: the traditional waffles, bacon, eggs, strawberries, and mimosas. The champagne I bought turned out to be quite adequate. While they cleaned up the kitchen--they insisted, and I let them--we watched another house show where people move to Utrecht. Alas, it was then time for them to go home, but before they left, Tron and I cut a gorgeous bunch of pink and white striped peonies from the bush that bloomed in the front yard, for her to take home. All the kids went in together on a bouquet for me, and Tron added a few peonies to it so it's even more beautiful. After they left, the Nipper and the Philosopher called, and the Diva texted me. I got to talk to the Lovely Friend, too, and hear Aquinas making cute noises in the background. Even though I can't quite get over the strangeness of not having anyone that *I* have to call, it was a very nice day.
