Success! The plan was to leave immediately after piano lesson. We left about 20 minutes later, so that's not too bad. We were hoping to go between the rainstorms. We didn't quite make it. We got through downtown before the storm arrived, which was a bonus. We had a TORRENT for part of the trip, and saw two wrecks. One of them looked serious, but fortunately it was on the other side of the road. At last it cleared away. We arrived, put on our suits, got coffee from the bookstore, and drove out to the park. Alas, the red flags were up. We had our coffee and snacks by the river. The red flags were still up. However, most of the intrepid souls who had come to the beach were totally ignoring them. We walked our chairs to a pleasant spot and watched the waves for awhile. Honestly, I've been swimming in such waves since I was a child. I've never encountered rip currents in this spot. The time we nearly got drowned was due to an unwise dredging of a river channel, not a rip current. So, what the heck, I went in. The Sparrowhawk was concerned about maybe losing his balance. At first I was inclined to agree, because the agitation of the water made the sand kind of unpredictable underfoot. But after I'd been in for awhile, it seemed the waves were calming a bit, so I went back to shore and got him, and it was fine. The water wasn't exactly warm, but it was delicious and quite swimmable, and we had a delightful frolic. Of course, we hadn't brought the towels, so we were all drippy, but I let him use my shirt to dry off with. We went back and changed in the room, then went to dinner at a fancier restaurant than our usual. Mostly that meant we had to wait a long time--not easy with my bum knee, which continues to trouble me. I had perch. The Sparrowhawk had seared tuna, which was way too done--more like medium rare, which is not correct. At his mildly pointing this out as the reason he didn't want a box for it, our very nice waitress got them to take it entirely off our bill. We returned to the motel and sat on the veranda enjoying the sweet mild air and watching the glowing red sun sink into a cloudbank and finally disappear. Definitely a good day.
