SilverLaceVine of Flourish
Aug. 19th, 2023 09:41 pmWe're living the high life over here. Yesterday, we walked over to the Greek Orthodox church in our neighborhood for their annual festival. It was a lovely day, sunny but not too hot, unlike some other years when it's been sweltering. We picked up two freshly grilled gyros, plus spanakopita for me and dolmathes for him, and an assortment of pastries for later. I got my once-a-year frouzo--a delicious slushie with ouzo in it. We didn't stay to eat there, but we stopped long enough to watch the tinies doing their first year of Greek dancing, all dressed up in their cute outfits.
This morning we made it to the farmers market. As the festival had been, it was very crowded, but we miraculously got a parking spot. We went through there like bandits, and came out with sweet corn, tomatoes, assorted baby squash, mushrooms, bok choy, onions, green beans, baby Peruvian purple potatoes, pasties, eggs, a couple of heritage breed chickens (frozen), and a half peck of Red Haven peaches. When ripe, Red Haven peaches have a skin like crimson velvet. They are both beautiful and delicious. Dinner was a pasty, an ear of corn, and tomato salad. The tomatoes are so ripe and juicy that they taste like the fruit that they are. Then we had a sliced peach each, topped with vanilla ice cream. We have so many that we'll have to eat peaches like they're going out of style, but that's the whole point of peaches in the summertime. I feel as if I have to love every summer as if it's going out of style . . . come to think of it, I have to love everything as if it's going out of style. Hope I can remember that when winter comes, ha ha.
