Nov. 29th, 2023 07:49 pmI got a pleasant surprise this morning. I called Madame to see if she was prepared to go out. She was looking more animated than usual, and informed me that her daughter from Florida was there, visiting, so she would not need additional amusement. I was happy to hear this. She also told me she had fallen last night in the bathroom, so her daugher had actually been staying in the room with her to keep an eye on her. I was not so happy to hear that. She says she's fine, and I'm glad she wasn't much hurt in the fall, but it's not fine to keep falling. It's really a good thing that she is in what she calls "my TEMPORARY apartment." That's a perfectly good name for it. It's ALL temporary.
At any rate, I was thrilled to have a day off. I had a more leisurely start to the day than anticipated, and then I used my free time to put away laundry, unpack all the things still left from the trip, make room in my closet and hang up a few new things I bought. I also searched diligently for a lost earring and for my car keys, which had gone missing. The earring is still AOL. I thought of one last place the car keys could be, and they were there. So that's one mystery solved. Putting things away resulted indirectly in two of my dresser drawers being jammed. I unloaded them to search out the cause, but couldn't fix it. I had to call on the Sparrowhawk, who removed the drawers entirely and found two pairs of socks gumming up the works. Oh the shame . . . Well, now the contents of two drawers are piled higgledy-piggledy on the floor and need to be sorted out and no doubt be culled and reduced. Thus does the quest for order result in a double helping of entropy.
For some reason, cooking still needs to be done, even though I did it yesterday. Much like laundry. I thawed out some chicken thighs and browned them, sprinkling them with cilentro and chipotle as they browned. I took them out and softened some chopped onion in the pan, then put in a bag of yellow rice and sauteed it a little bit before adding chicken broth and half a jar of salsa. Then I put the chicken back in, covered the pan, and put in the oven for some indeterminate period of time. I didn't really time it, because it occurred to me that I should call my friend in Minnesota who tried to call on Monday when I was on the phone with Queenie. I took the food out when she hung up--probably about 45 minutes. At first bite, I was afraid I'd spiced it too much, but with some chopped lettuce and avocado, it was quite tasty.
It was only after I'd eaten that I realized I meant to use my phone time to start the sorting process. Ah well. It is a pitiful thing when you need a day off just to get some housekeeping done!
