I am just feeling cross today because of home improvements. You might think this would make me happy, especially since the insurance company is paying for most of it, and indeed I should be showing more gratitude. But I fundamentally don't like changes and fuss. Also, I had to get up way too early because they arrived about 7:30 and I was still in my so-called leisure wear--sweatpants and a hoodie--but had to answer the door anyway, because the Sparrowhawk was making coffee in the kitchen and his legs don't move that fast at such an early hour. I took a moment to put on my presentable clothes and some shoes before moving the car so they could plonk a giant dumpster in the driveway. No shower, because it gives me the creeps to be naked just a window pane away from a bunch of strange men with hammers and crowbars, even if the window is occluded.

It went on like this all day, with loud banging and rattling noises everywhere and people popping up randomly in different windows. I kept shifting myself around the house trying to be inconspicuous, but it didn't work very well. However, due to getting up early, I did have time to cross a few tasks off the list: changing the sheets, washing the old ones, putting away more laundry, and doing some meal prep for the Sparrowhawk so he could make stir-fry. I had hoped the crew might go home at 5 pm, but they were far too hard-working for that. It was pitch dark and nearly 8 pm before they finally went away. I keep saying to myself that it's only a few more days, only a few more days . . . .

We had about a year of construction on our twin house, and now it's intermittently happening next door across our alley. I feel for you.
