Halloween of Shadow
Oct. 31st, 2024 08:56 pmWe were up before dawn this morning, which is not hard to do these days. The benefit of it is that we had a view of delicious streaks of rose and pale yellow in the east, gradually fading into lavender as the sun rose. Very Maxfield Parrish colors. It was a very small recompense for a truly wretched night in which three of my nemeses ganged up on me to foment one big pile of discomfort. That was not my plan. But my plan always begins with a decent sleep, so step 1 is often a failure. I went back to bed after it got light. The nap was a relative success, but meant I didn't really do much all morning.
I felt as if I was underwater all day. It was such strange weather for the last day of October. The day began warm, but with a rolling grey sky like surf, and a gusty wind that turned and turned restlessly and blew the leaves in whispering currents here and there. The Sparrowhawk went in search of a pumpkin. Because of my general debilitation, I had neglected to provide one earlier, when they were plentiful. He couldn't find a single one! It seemed all the stores had colluded to remove them. Later, I thought of a place where I bet I could have found one, but at that point, we didn't want to go out any more. We haven't had a Halloween without a pumpkin in so many years! I put on my black and gold shirt decorated with suns, moons, and stars, my sun and moon earrings, and a garland of fall leaves. We had a big bowl of candy. Yet, for the first half hour, no one came to our door! Fortunately, I thought to check the porch light. The bulb had burned out! The Sparrowhawk installed a new one, and finally we got some visitors. As always, it was great fun to see all of them in their costumes, from the tinies holding a parent's hand, all the way to the teenagers with their pillowcases and their creative use of hoodies to suggest a costume. This is the one day in the year when you're allowed to walk up to strangers and ask them for candy, and some of the apparitions seem not quite sure they're going to get away with it!
The wind got colder and the night darker. We turned off the light and still have a lot of candy. We'll find someone to take it off our hands, I'm sure.
