Jan. 6th, 2025 10:32 pmUgh, I thought I had issued a command (phrased as a request) that no more people personally known to me get sick for awhile. Apparently I have been ignored. Today I first got more incoherent messages from Madame. They were sent via dictation, I think, and center around the need for someone to come and pick her up. She says she is packing up a few things such as extra shoes, and then someone should meet her by the door and transport her elsewhere. I recognize these kinds of messages. I think she must still be fighting an infection. Every time that happens, it inflames the dementia and causes the person to become agitated and distressed about things that only make sense in kind of a surreal way. I let Mademoiselle know what was going on and requested that she fill me in on the situation. If Madame is still feeling ill, or is under treatment for pneumonia, I'm not going to take her out. It's not safe. I would be happy to stop by and visit her, but if covid is in the building, I don't want to, because I am sick and tired of getting sick and don't want to risk it again. Mademoiselle said she knows, because her mom is texting her too, but she couldn't converse with me because she was on the phone with Madame's retirement accounts, doing some financial housekeeping. Also, Mademoiselle and her baby have recovered from a bout of covid, but now they're sick again with something else. Maybe I'll find out tomorrow.
I talked to Queenie this morning, and while we were conversing, I received news that a dear friend, who shall remain nameless only in case she doesn't want her medical stuff discussed on the internet, had spent the night in the ER--and was still there, EIGHTEEN HOURS later, residing on a cot in the hall because every room in the place was jammed including the triage areas. This is incomprehensibly frustrating and weird. She finally was admitted and got a bed, close to 24 hours after she arrived. An unknown neurological issue is the problem, and needs to be diagnosed. So far, all they know is that she has not had a stroke. Tomorrow they will do a spinal tap. This one really strikes fear to my heart, because she is one of my most necessary people and I'm very worried, but as always, can do very little.
Other than that, I went for a brief walk. "Oh, this isn't so bad," I thought. "It's good to get outdoors." Then the wind began to blow. "Cripes, this is awful," I thought. "I'm freezing my face off." The footing was uncertain because most of the walks and streets had not been cleared and were icy. That's why it was a brief walk. I tried. I made an impromptu soup out of various leftovers. It was mostly bean soup, with chicken broth and some purple cabbage and apples left over from cooking the ham, and then some rice the Sparrowhawk made, also a bit of ham. It was tasty for a cold night. We had a Zoom with one of our book groups. It's cold, but we seem to be missing the big storm. For once, it has gone south of us.
