This being Ash Wednesday, I had an appointment before Madame Day began. But it was no problem, because I woke up at 6 quite by accident. We had a tough time finding a place to get ashed, due to our various commitments. Immaculate Heart of Mary had a Mass at 9. It was fun because they have a school, and the whole front half of the church was full of school students of all shapes and sizes. The old people and the young women with their babies were in the back. They had a very efficient priest who marched things right along, probably because he's used to doing the school masses and has to get the kids back in class at the appointed time. "Remember, man, that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The old and the young, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the humble. As James Shirley said in the 17th century, "Only the actions of the just/Smell sweet and blossom in their dust."

Anyway, we got home just in time for me to get the Sparrowhawk some toast and coffee, and pack myself up to go see Madame. When I arrived, she was fully dressed and had been reading a book! A great improvement over the last couple of times. She has her new hearing aid, but she still doesn't hear very well. However, it's certainly better than not at all! She really wanted to go out. There was some difficulty because it was raining and it gets harder and harder for her to get in and out of the car. I no longer let her go off to the bathroom by herself, because she gets lost on the way back. I followed her, carrying her giant puffy coat which she had insisted on wearing. I was standing outside when a rather officious busybody came out and asked if I was with the lady in a walker. She informed me that Madame would probably need help getting the door open. Yeah, maybe. My usual plan is to wait and see what people need. However, there's always somebody who thinks it's better to interfere immediately, and they usually just get in the way. Every week, I wonder how much longer Madame and I will be able to make our getaway for lunch. But every time we do, it's a little victory.

I was tired when I got home, and was falling asleep before our very simple dinner of fish chowder and toasted cheese.
