Octopus of Bliss

ismoI hit a bad patch lately, but I'm better now. It was the IRS, primarily, that put me in a tailspin. It turns out we do owe them a sizable chunk of money due to an error in 2016. Also, we have a new revised budget now. This is a good thing, but also a depressing thing because it makes one aware of the new limits. The IRS thing is kind of a first-world problem, because the fact that we have to pay taxes means that we have money, and in fact we do have the means to pay. It's just that I don't want to . . . . It seems that the last few months have been all about having my nose rubbed in limitations that I don't want but can't change. This was just one more smack on a sore spot.
We got a lot of work done on the yard during the good weather. Wednesday night, there was a good old thunderstorm with the wind lashing and the rain pelting and the thunder rattling. Today it got cold, and rained most of the day. It was a nice day to stay inside and do some reading and writing while looking out the bay window at the rain. Also a nice day to hand-wash some things, put away laundry, clean bathrooms, and so forth. Inside, a slow, puttering day. Outside, everything happens so fast! Before the rain, the Crimson King Norway maple outside my bedroom window was at its budding peak: each tassel of flowers was golden-green, centered in a ruffle of tiny crimson leaves. The clusters were like jewelry--peridot and topaz set in carnelian, gleaming in the sun. After the rain, the buds had blown away, and the leaves were expanding their crumpled wings like butterflies emerging from the chrysalis. Soon the chlorophyll will be rushing through their veins, and they'll get busy in their sober green work clothes. There's a nice mixture of spring metaphors for you. But everything IS metamorphosis right now. I wish I could say the same about myself.
