ismoThe autumn clematis in the front yard has passed through its blooming cycle, unremarked by this blog, but not in reality. It was an amazing, fragrant, brilliantly white snow cone of flowers for a couple of glorious weeks. The rest of the year, it's a green beast that tries to dominate and conquer every other plant in the flower bed and has to be forcefully and repeatedly beaten back. I tolerate this for the sake of the weeks when it's magnificently blooming.
The raggedy rose bush next to the clematis, which I have to defend from its aggressive neighbor lest it be suffocated, has miraculously re-bloomed and sports half a dozen lovely white roses elegantly spaced along its curved branches.
For me, it was another day of not exactly breaking forth in bloom. Slept badly, woke early, sat around feeling like crap, decided to take a nap, got nothing done. Sigh. During my pre-nap irrational irritability, I was in the family room shouting angrily "I'M TIRED OF THIS, I'M SO TIRED OF IT!" Of course, the window was open, and of course my neighbor came out to get her lawnmower from the shed just as I was yelling like a maniac. Yes, yes, you live next to a crazy old lady, move on there's nothing to see here . . .
It was another spookily perfect false summer day out in the back yard, with the trees very very slowly losing their grip, like elves who are experiencing the Fading, still tall and beautiful as a dream with that ethereal golden gleam on the surface, but knowing deep within that soon they must take ship at the Havens and go. And all I want is just to have enough energy to participate in it, to be worthy to be a part of the rise and fall. It doesn't seem like too much to ask . . . .
