SageThicket of Trill
Mar. 29th, 2026 08:57 amI didn't blog last night because we wanted to go to bed early and get plenty of sleep . . . ha ha. Yeah no, as we say here in the midwest, that didn't happen. The Sparrowhawk looked so tired that we started our bed prep about nine. We went to sleep at a good time. But this morning, both of us are staggering about due to waking up in the middle of the night. I've given magnesium a good try at this point, and it doesn't seem to have any effect. Although it may be good for me in other ways, who knows. Now we are packed (mostly) and will be taking off for the train station in an hour or so. I am boldly separating myself from my laptop (sob), so it remains to be seen if I will do any blogging by phone. Leaving the laptop behind is mostly a move to save weight. I have packed everything in my travel backpack, so I will have hands free to wrangle the Sparrowhawk's luggage if necessary.
I have some concerns about this trip. The Sparrowhawk hasn't bounced back from his post-surgery slump as much as we had both hoped. Yesterday we walked half a mile out and back to see if he will be able to navigate the half-mile journey to Aquinas's daycare to pick him up. He did pretty well until near the end, when he experienced freezing and balance issues in a way he hasn't before. He's taking his folding cane, and when we go to get Aquinas, we'll have a stroller, so pushing that may help. Had I known this was going to happen, I might have had second thoughts about the whole project, but here we are, so we'll just go ahead and hope for the best. Alas, we are quite the pair, as I am not at the top of my game either. But it is an adventure, and also it is what it is. My sister from Florida tells me that this is a Michigan phrase, but I think it's universal.
Yesterday I was astonished to find a thin layer of SNOW over everything when I looked out in the morning. But the sun has come out, and the snow gradually evaporated. Today it is still chilly, but the next couple of days may hit 70 in Chicago. Then it will be cold again on the way home. This weather is exasperating for people who wanted to pack light. Long sleeves? Short sleeves? Take the fleece? Leave the cannoli? Well, if there are cannoli, I can assure you I won't be leaving them.
