Slush of Trill
Apr. 4th, 2026 08:04 pmTron and the Lumberjack arrived on Thursday afternoon, and we had another lovely couple of days with family. They took us out to dinner at a favorite brewery. I suggested that I could drive so I could drop the Sparrowhawk off at the door, but we found a parking spot right at the door anyway. It was our lucky night. The food was good, the beer was interesting and tasty, and the Lumberjack announced his good news: he has been promoted to permanent lecturer. This isn't quite the same as having tenure, but it means he won't have to get his contract renewed every couple of years, but will be considered a permanent member of his department. With the promotion goes a pay raise, also good. This is great news for us, because it means they will be here in Michigan indefinitely. Tron said his performance review said all kinds of good things about him, but he modestly didn't repeat them. We are so proud of him. I had gone to the bakery outlet in the morning to bring home breakfast pastries, which in this case served as dessert. It was amusing to see how they were almost all eaten up.
Our guests assured us they felt no need to be entertained. They just wanted to take it easy, and that suited us fine. Particularly as it was raining almost constantly Thursday night, Friday, and today. The ceiling started leaking again and had to be bucketized, but so far the basement is still dry. On Friday morning, I invited Tron to go to the bakery with me and help select the next round. We were there early, when the full range of treats was available, and we brought back more for the second round than for the first! The kids went out to get sushi for lunch, the Sparrowhawk took a nap, and I took advantage of the opportunity to mix up some hot cross buns and make apple crisp. My baking just didn't work out! Either I didn't put in enough yeast, or the yeast had lost its oomph, because the dough just didn't rise! It was given every opportunity on a warm stove top, but it just sat there. So the flavor was good, but the texture was not light and poofy, but rather obstinately dense. Paul Hollywood would have hated it. Tron didn't hate it. Once I put the frosting on, she happily ate them and took some home with her. But I feel my professional self-esteem has been injured.
In the evening, we ordered pizza and watched Demolition Man. I hadn't seen it in a long time, and it was surprisingly hilarious. I'm going to adopt "Enhance your calm, citizen," into my permanent vocabulary. A lot of naps were taken and snacks were eaten. I love knowing that they think of this as home and are that comfortable. I felt very apologetic about the state of the basement, but the Lumberjack said he didn't care. The bed was made up and comfortable, and the tv worked, so they were all right with it. Tron needed self-care and a little tender care from us too. She's suffering from migraines as well as the after-effects of chemo. We were so happy that she used some of her precious energy to come up and see us, and that we were able to provide things she needed while she was here. We packed up a few things--including their Easter bundle--for them this morning and saw them off. I urged her to take a few more buns, and she laughed and said "Mom, I wasn't going to ask! I was planning to just take them!" We have a couple of sweet rolls left for Easter morning, and a bunch of bacon left from this morning's breakfast.
I'm exhausted, and I have a sore on my lip, probably from travel stress. The Duchess reached out yesterday and kindly invited us to join them and the Dr. Nurse family for Easter dinner. I was delighted to accept, but I have to admit that trying to imagine tomorrow and going to church followed by driving over there for dinner seems quite impossible. Maybe I'll feel more like it when the sun comes up. As Tron texted after arriving home, "We are all so smart and brave and strong!"--a sentiment I heart-ed. <3
