Apr. 8th, 2026 08:40 pmI tried to get over to Madame's early today, because I felt tired and hoped to come home early. I stopped to get coffee and cake. When I arrived, she was in the big room playing a card game with others around the table, under the guidance of a staff member. I was amazed, because she almost never participates in activities, and I decided not to interrupt her. I went down to her room and waited for fifteen minutes for them to finish the game. When I went back to check on their progress, Madame was dozing in her chair, having lost interest in the game. So I did not scruple to wake her up and take her back to her room to visit. She seemed to be hoping we would go somewhere else, but she was still dressed in her navy blue pajamas and having a hard time getting up to walk, so I was not inclined to try anything too adventurous.
She's always a little confused these days. She forgets what season of the year it is, and where she is, and is always amazed that I know how to find her. But she cheered up quite a bit as we talked, and remembered some things from her own past. She recognized the South Shore Line when I described it. She said she had gone to Chicago that way many times, and I'm sure she did, based on what she has told me before. I often stay for lunch, but today I thought it was best to let her go and eat in the dining room on her regular schedule. So I did get home a little earlier than usual.
The Sparrowhawk cooked some steak from one of the farm ladies' meat bundles. I went and lay down while he was cooking. I hate to do that, but I really had to. Too tired . . . After he went to the gym, it was still light out, and the clouds had cleared away so there was a little sun. I motivated myself to go outside by telling myself I needed to go check on the apple trees to see if they were blooming yet. They only bloom for a few precious days each year, and I don't want to miss it. I laughed when I got there, though--not even close! I'll keep checking, but nothing is happening at the moment. The woods are carpeted with blue scylla, but I didn't see any dogtooth violets, and the celandine is not out yet either. I was dejected by how tired and slow I felt, but at least I was outside. I've said this before, but I think it's terrible for old people to be cooped up inside. It's no wonder they lose track of time and place! If I ran the world, they'd be taken for a walk in the garden every day, and maybe parked in the fresh air swathed in blankets, like Scandinavian toddlers.
