Yesterday I had quite a nice Sandwich Day of Leisure, enjoying an extended lunch while reading The Would-Be-Goods by E. Nesbit, and an SG1 fanfic, just for old times sake. For those who are interested in my sandwich journey, I had toasted cheese on challah bread, with sliced tomatoes, and ham and mayo on whole wheat and oatmeal, with lettuce, radishes, and a dill pickle. I couldn't stop myself from doing a few things, mostly putting clean sheets on the bed, washing the old ones, and putting the Sparrowhawk's laundry away. Not content with the amount of sandwich-type things we'd already eaten, he went out and got us some cheeseburgers for dinner. I was not greatly tempted to go out, because it rained on and off for a good part of the day, so everything was squishy. As it got dark, the wind rose and a thunderstorm blew in. We had just gone up to bed when the tornado sirens went off. We went down to the basement and turned on the weather news on the tv down there. We learned that they turn the sirens on whenever there's a tornado warning in any part of the county. So the danger was not really near us. Nevertheless, we stayed down there until the sirens stopped, and then went back upstairs. We are really lucky, basement-wise. We have a room with a comfy bed, a futon couch, and a tv to lurk in during bad weather. We could stay there all night if necessary.

I expected to feel better this morning, and was getting ready to go and visit Madame, when it came reluctantly to my attention that I didn't really feel all that good. I even gave myself a covid test, which was a waste, because it was negative. But I did let myself off the hook for the day, with some encouragement from the Sparrowhawk, who didn't want me to go either. I regret not seeing her, even though I know that for her it's an ephemeral pleasure now, one that probably is neither missed nor remembered. But you never know--and anyway, it's still worth it for her to enjoy the moments that she does enjoy. Provokingly, I still feel immensely tired today, even without the excuse of a virus. The Sparrowhawk says he is starting to feel better, but he still skipped the gym today. He asked for some more noodles, having eaten up the last batch. I thought he might be tired of ham (one definition of eternity: two people and a ham) even though it is the very BEST ham, so I made some hamburger stroganoff to go with the noodles. Strange how ground beef used to be the most prosaic of economy meals, and is now a treat because of the cost!

It's cooler after the storm, but after just a day or two of warm weather, all the buds have suddenly popped out. I had just started to notice that the bare branches were looking less severe, and more covertly decorative, and now they have taken the stage in full panoply! Everything is turning green. The daffodils are a frieze of gold at the edge of the ivy. The birds are all singing--cardinals, cheeky robins, chickadees, and the occasional thrush or warbler.
