Today's big excitement was working at the downtown festival of the arts from before 8 to 12:30. We weren't doing art things, however. Our UU church has a food booth, like many other civic groups that raise money this way during the event. Festival gets 24 percent of the take, but we still make a couple of thousand dollars that way. Each booth has to contribute workers to clean up trash in the general area, and our mission commander for the event texted late last night in a bit of a panic because she wasn't sure if we had cleanup crew for this morning. If your group doesn't send the required volunteers, you get put on the Bad List by the festival organizers. So we got up extra early and showed up. I was given a broom and scoop and worked until 9:15 picking up trash, and then went to the booth and worked on the taco line serving customers until 12:30. I must say that doing trash pickup does not improve one's view of one's fellow humans. Especially those smokers who think their discarded butts will magically evaporate into rainbow mist, and the folks who think that throwing their trash into a lovely decorative planter will make it invisible.

Overall, though, I'm happy we did it. I have a sense of accomplishment, and I'm also grateful for the chance to do my little bit to make the world more beautiful. We were a sight as we made our way back to the car, with our matching limps. The Sparrowhawk walks with effort when he gets tired, dragging one foot, and my bad joints had stiffened up to the point where I was limping too. I couldn't wait to get home and take off my shoes and have another big drink of water. The weather has changed, thank goodness. It rained all night, stopping just in time for the festival, and the rest of the day has been cool and breezy--unlike some festivals of past years when we worked in blazing 90-degree sunshine. Probably the sun is better for sales, but I like this better.

you win!
