Lopseed of Zenith
Jun. 9th, 2017 09:59 pmWell now, this is just very naughty of me. . . . Nothing bad happened--I just got too tired to post for a few days, and then I felt I had to come up with some outstanding reason to get back on the horse! When we were at the Lake, I was so immersed in physical reality, and noticing so many things around me that it was too hard to decide which ones to mention.
This morning, I went out for a walk by the small neighborhood lake early, because I knew it was going to get hot later. It was a perfect summer morning. The first thing I saw was a small grass snake hurrying across the pathway into the grass. It's kind of amazing how they move without seeming to move. They just flow, as if they saw ahead of themselves and decided to be there, and then they were. I was glad, however, that it was going away from me instead of toward me because snakes still make me jump. Then I saw a turtle swimming, with just his head and the top of his shell poking out. But he ducked under the surface as soon as he saw me looking. Out on the edge of the lily pads, I saw the heron--loftily ignoring me because I was too far away. There were lots of other birds who taunted me by posing beautifully right in front of me, and then flying off before I could aim my camera at them. At the end of the boardwalk, I saw a family of ducklings walking in a row, and far out on the lake, two swans sailing magnificently along. They were so far out that my nearsighted eyes had trouble knowing for sure, but I think I saw a couple of cygnets following them. This was a great relief to my mind, because I didn't know what happened to the eggs in the big nest I'd been watching. It looks as if they hatched out fine! Yellow flags were blooming among the cattails, and the water was sparkling.
Then I had to go and get a haircut. It's a pity I couldn't have done it earlier, because yesterday, we went to the post office and got our passports renewed. I doubt that anything would have made my photo really charming, but it would have been improved by a nice haircut. When we got the original passports, they told us not to smile, so I didn't this time either. I look rather grim. The Sparrowhawk just went ahead and smiled anyway. He said "I'm always smiling, so it will look more like me this way."
