Jul. 10th, 2018 10:14 pmSleeping is HARD WORK. It reminds me of eating Bonomo's Turkish Taffy when I was a kid. If the weather was hot, as it is now you'd chill the taffy bar in the refrigerator. Then you'd sit on the front step with your friends and smack the taffy smartly against the step, shattering it into many fragments so it would be easy to share. Sleep was like that last night--shattered into many fragments. I woke up every hour on the hour until about five, which I knew because I could hear the clock strike five. I just refused to get up, and finally went back to sleep for a couple of hours. So, by working really hard to go back to sleep again and again and again, I finally got something approximating eight hours. (And by linking to the Wikipedia about Bonomo's, I learned that taffy is "a non-Newtonian fluid." Who knew! How science fictional! I wonder if sleep is a non-Newtonian fluid too . . . .)
Anyway, it's totally astonishing what a difference it makes to have somewhere near enough sleep. I felt so much better today. Still lots of stiffness and achey joints, but I actually felt some tiny sparks of enthusiasm for living. I went out for a walk in the morning, because it was already 82 by the time I got up, and didn't get any cooler. Seen blooming: sneezeweed, compass plant, sunflowers, Queen Anne's Lace, bergamot, achillea, purple coneflowers and pink and white hydrangeas. The nuns have changed their planters over to summer colors, and they are now a riot of red and yellow ginger, red bougainvillea, and coleus. I saw a distant hawk circling the trees, and close up, lots of dragonflies over the pond and a goldfinch in the rushes.
