Well . . . the best-laid plans . . . . I went for a walk not early enough, so it was already 87 degrees. This was probably a mistake. I was exhausted by the time I got home. About a quart of ice water later, I was reasonably glad I did it. Writing time: quite desultory. Still trying to talk myself into believing I can write a novel mostly set in a place I haven't been to, and not sure I should talk myself into it because maybe I'd just look foolish. The Sparrowhawk points out I haven't been to the benthic ocean either. True, but no one has--except Sylvia Earle, who should have a cameo in the Aquaman movie, but probably doesn't.

I try not to get excited about things, because they so rarely turn out. But I thought it would be safe to get excited about a little thing like a Movie Pass. it was a hot day, and we wanted something fun to look forward to, so we planned to go see a movie and break in our brand new Movie Pass. In the morning, we checked the app, and a movie we wanted to see was available at six. I tried to call my mother early, but to no avail. She never answered. The Sparrowhawk quickly cooked some hamburger thing that didn't work out well. But that's okay, I said to myself, because I'll just have some popcorn AT THE MOVIE. And then . . . we checked the app again before leaving, and suddenly, NO MOVIES were available by Movie Pass, anywhere in our area. The closest thing we could have watched was in a small town 20-29 minutes away on the highway. That is not what I think of when I think of "in my area." The Sparrowhawk had a chat with tech support via the app. They claimed they were having "technical issues," of a nature unspecified. I stopped being excited and returned to my Eeyoreish state. I felt childishly sad, as if I might actually start sniffling. I was depressed enough to eat potato chips, and now my stomach hurts.

Having nothing better to do, I called my mother after all. A couple of times. She finally called back. I had been worried because I never spoke to her yesterday, after a trip that the Duchess reported as having been somewhat trying. She was all cheered up again, although that meant I had to listen to her going on about Ol' Whatsisname in more detail than I care to contemplate. I don't care as long as her leg heals.

The Sparrowhawk has been watching "Law and Order" reruns--as most people tend to do at some point in their lives, "Law and Order" being like a universal constant of existence now. But I got fed up after episode after episode with improbably villainous female psychopaths and murderers. So tonight in lieu of a real movie, we tried watching "Mama Mia" on TV, but I'm not really feelin' it. I guess Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan are supposed to be a kind of trifecta, a male version of The Judgment of Paris for middle-aged ladies. I feel somewhat fond of their middle-aged faces after having seen them in so many movies, but if the movie makers wanted stir real interest, they would show me the Three (or Four) Chrises in short tunics and sandals, their locks crowned with laurel, all begging me to roll the golden apple in their direction. Fortunately, I have my own blue-eyed boy to contemplate in the interstices of my disappointments. Movie Pass! J'accuse! You have failed me.

oh honey. that sucks.

I have a friend in Portland who's been experiencing the same problems with MoviePass. They've announced that the $9.95 tier will now get you three movies a month. Their model has always been unsustainable.
