ismoHaving watched all the available Handmaid's Tale episodes, I'm disappointed that I haven't gotten to the end yet! I'm so longing for someone to get out--and not by jumping off a bridge, either. Now we're watching The Keepers, which I highly recommend for writers, or for anyone who wants to understand just how twisted and dark the underside of the "normal" power structure can be. It's pretty damn triggery. I wonder when there will be an end to this kind of abuse, and the normalization of abuse. We need Wonder Woman now--an army of Wonder Women.
I suppose that makes it kind of odd that in my next paragraph I go off to church . . . la la la . . . though it is a Unitarian church. Honestly, I do not believe for a minute that Unitarians don't abuse people. Any time you have a power structure where some people are considered more special and important than others, those people will take advantage of their position. Not all of them, but enough. It seems to be inevitable, a corollary to the Iron Law of Oligarchy. And those who don't actively abuse will, for the most part, nervously overlook the abuse, because they stand to be rewarded more by their fellow perpetrators than by any victims they might defend.
Well, as I said, la la la . . . We had our yearly picnic potluck on the patio after church. The Sparrowhawk brought some tasty vegetarian beans with lots of peppers and spices, and I brought my banana bread, which turned out very well. My friend Chris from the music group brought a whole cooler full of water balloons. She is awesome! The minister was beaned by a younger congregation member--sploosh, right on the noggin. She took it in good part. I missed everyone I threw at. They're too fast! This is my idea of church. Eat together, play some games, make music, skip the sermon and all the rest of it.
