Many thanks for all the good wishes. They must have had some effect, because I had a really easy drive, and the traffic was light all the way. I was in the NO JACKASS zone, which doesn't happen every time! Also, I was very happy to see with my own eyes that my mother's ulcers are starting to heal. They still look terrible. If you saw them for the first time, you'd be horrified. But with all the experience I have now, I can see that the wound bed looks so much healthier, and the skin around the wounds also looks much less inflamed. At the edges, and even in a couple of what the PT called "islands" in the middle, new skin is actually forming. All this care is working.

That said, however, the day was exhausting. Two hours driving, to arrive an hour and a half before we had to leave for the appointment. But still we were behind schedule by the time Mother had actually finished lunch, bathroom trip, etc. etc. and was ready to leave. Then another hour of driving to the appointment, where we arrived in the nick of time. We spent about three hours altogether in the clinic. It was 87 degrees out. Mother was wearing a turtleneck and jacket, and then I put her extra jacket and a knit hat on her, and gave her some hand warmers, and they put warmed blankets over her. She was okay until about half an hour before they were done. Then she turned very pale and started shivering uncontrollably. The PT tried to finish up fast, but Mother was in misery until it was over and I helped her back into the car--which was VERY hot after being parked for three hours! Nevertheless she was shaking so hard so couldn't get the cap on the water bottle.

I turned her seat heater on, and wrapped her in a wool car blanket. We were halfway back to her place before she warmed up enough to fall asleep for a few minutes. After that, she was not in a very good mood. We stuck around until they brought her pills and dinner, which she complained about but finally agreed to eat, in preference to my bugging her about asking for a snack later. I tried to clean her hearing aids, but couldn't figure out how to make it work. The Duchess graciously said she'd stop by and do it tomorrow. The Sparrowhawk fixed her computer so (hopefully) she'll be able to find her files. We got a late start home, but made it before dark. On the way, we ate the sandwiches I made for Mother but couldn't get her to eat.

Oof. Sorry for the info dump. I was okay as I drove home, but when I arrived, i was about ready to pass out, and could hardly pry myself off the couch to go to bed. Today, I took a walk, had coffee, and went to the bookstore to pick up my copy of Half-Witch, by John Schoffstall, a friend with whom I was once in a writers' group where we critiqued this in ms. I can't wait to read it again, in its final form! We watched a terrific Indian movie called "Lagaan." It's a sports movie, in a way--the tale of an epic cricket match that will decide the fate of the villagers who play against the arrogant British overlords. It's beautiful, stars Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, and has lots of singing and dancing as well as cricket. Which I must say I still don't understand in the very slightest. I could probably learn Hindi before I learned the rules of cricket!

oh yay
