ismoI guess the most momentous thing that happened today was that the agent I had queried got back to me--within days! Some kind of a miracle! He passed on looking at my book, but gave me some really helpful advice and reasons. It is frequent hell to be so damn smart. He said almost exactly what I'd imagined an agent would say. I told myself not to jump to a conclusion before I'd even asked the question, so I asked. And yes, I had already guessed the answer. The gist of it was that the game has changed, and the bar you have to jump to get back in the game is much higher than it used to be. I need a big project--bigger and more desirable than just one good book.
The sad thing is that I feel like practically weeping with gratitude simply because he responded to me courteously and helpfully. I felt seen as a human being. I appreciate that more than I can say, even if his answer was no.
After that, I felt as if it would be nice to get out of the house and play hooky from talking to my mother, so we took our popcorn bucket and went to the movies. The Sparrowhawk was interested in seeing Operation Finale, a retelling of the capture of Adolf Eichmann. I thought it would be great to see the bad guys get theirs for a change. I've seen reviews that complained it wasn't historically accurate enough, but I thought it was a well-made movie. However, I found it quite devastating. Quietly devastating, but devastating. I don't know if I could recommend it to people. I would think that if you were Jewish it would be even worse. Unless you want to cry and rant all the way home, which is pretty much what I did.
