Nov. 19th, 2018 10:29 pmUps and downs! We woke up this morning feeling still quite spaced out and moving slowly, but much better after a night's sleep. AND when the first thing you see in the morning is an endless vista of waves crashing right outside your window, you can't help feeling happy! We both realized that we would form an intention to do something or other, then look out at the waves, and come to a few minutes later to find we'd just been looking and listening and had completely forgotten about doing the thing.
We ventured out and found a great coffee shop two minutes away. And they're going to be open all weekend, and they also sell ice cream and cake. Then we drove to Harris Teeter with our very long grocery list and shopped and shopped until we couldn't get any more into the shopping cart and I was showing tell-tale signs of low blood sugar and shopping fatigue. Then we hauled everything home and put it away, and made lunch and ate it out on the main deck, looking at the water. I emailed the kids with an account of what we now had in the house, so they could remind me of anything I didn't get. The menu is sort of a group process, complete with shareable google doc.
We talked to the Diva when she got off work. She was hoping her family might want to come out and see us, but I was guessing they wouldn't. She called back and said that regretfully, they had a lot of work to finish up so they'd prefer to stay home. Anyway, it was pitch dark by then. I called my mother and she hit the Facetime button by accident, so I got a look at her, and she is much happier and in better shape than she has been in a long time. They've been doing a lot of tests on her. Later, the Duchess sent me an email with a lot more information from the docs. Basically, Mother's aortic stenosis is very severe, and without this procedure, she might live two years, with increasing disability as her heart fails. But she is a good candidate for a TAVR-style valve replacement. They'll probably discharge her tomorrow or Wednesday, then bring her back for a cardiac catheterization, and then schedule the procedure for sometime before Christmas. I can hardly even imagine how much the Duchess has gone through, in spending hours and hours at the hospital patiently shepherding Mother.
With all this settled, we ate some chicken we bought already roasted, plus broccoli and baked potatoes. And then we started to clean up . . . aaand no water came out of the tap. Uh oh. We contacted the owner. She called her neighbors, then referred us to the town website, where a notice is posted saying that they've had a water main break and our whole neighborhood is without water. Aggghhhh. Not what you want to hear when anticipating 13 people for dinner in the near future. We considered moving to a hotel for the night, but decided to try to tough it out. The Sparrowhawk went to the Dollar Store and bought five gallons of water for flushing the toilet and a case of bottled water for drinking. Crossing our fingers that it will be fixed soon . . . .
