Last Friday at the con was another day of the usual con activities! I think that was the day I stopped by the Heinlein Society table to take a selfie with the guys for my niece, the Former Naval Person. She has started volunteering with the Heinlein Society and helping to run their newsletter. We made a donation to Heinlein for Heroes, their program that sends books to people in the armed forces. It's something I'm sure she would have appreciated when she was in the Navy.

By this time, the con committee had arranged with the Messekeskus facility to open up some larger function rooms. This cost them more money, but I hope that with all the additional con memberships, they will still come out ahead. So they had a big event space with bleacher seating for the Hugos. I stood in line for an hour and a half to get in. The Sparrowhawk was planning to join me in line, after attending a panel about Don Rosa, one of the Donald Duck artists. But by the time he got there, they had ushered the front end of the line through the doors, and we were serpentined around under the bleachers, so he couldn't come in to join me. We both attended the Hugos, but separately.

It had been clear as soon as the nominees were listed that a lot of women would be honored that night! Karen Lord was an excellent emcee, and the whole awards ceremony had an air of dignity and excitement that has sometimes been lacking. I really enjoyed being there, and was happy with all the awards, even those that weren't what I'd picked. Every winner was a worthy choice, as were (almost) all those who didn't receive the award. I won't even call them losers, because to be nominated is to win an honor beyond anything most of us can expect! Still, after an hour and a half in line, plus the three hour awards, I was beat. We didn't even look for parties. We were happy to head home on the train--at 10 pm, there was still a gleam of twilight in the sky--have a drink at the hotel, and head for bed.

Last night, we had an impromptu visit from the Sparrowhawk's half brother, Fritz. He lives a couple of hours away, and likes to get out and ramble at times. It was Restaurant Week here, and he asked us to find an Italian restaurant where we could eat. His wife doesn't eat gluten, and he was craving pasta. We spent a pleasant couple of hours. I had tomato salad and--what else--grilled trout. I'm so used to eating fish now! To continue the theme of falling into bed, I was super tired when we got home, and fell asleep as soon as I lay down. The Sparrowhawk says I woke up some time later and remarked cryptically, "Why am I like this?" He was unable to answer this question, but luckily I fell asleep again instantly, so he didn't have to.
