ismoWe're almost into the phase of Leave. The waxing moon was high in the sky last night when we went to bed. I've always found the autumn phases of the Ecological Calendar very evocative: Leave, Shadow, and Ember. But, weirdly, the trees aren't really turning yet. Things are drying out and yellowing, but more because it hasn't rained in almost a month than because the frost has touched them. There really hasn't been any frost yet. Next week, it will go back up to 80 degrees.
We got up too early and grumbled off to church, because it was our turn to be SuperVolunteers and put everything together and then take it apart again after the service. The Sparrowhawk also had to put the new inserts into the programs. I thought it was an instrumental music day, but it turned out that only one instrument was playing. Zoe is a high school violinist who is really good, and she performed a solo. Her father happened to be sitting behind me. He told me afterwards that he got almost as much of a kick out of watching me move along with the music as he did from watching her play it. I was slightly embarrassed, but it's true. I can't help feeling the music go through me, especially if it's the instrument I play myself, so I know what the other musician is doing. When I'm in a concert hall, I restrain myself. I didn't think anyone was looking!
Our keyboardist recently had a baby, and now she plays with the baby in a sling in front of her. Nothing could possibly be sweeter than hearing the notes and seeing baby girl listening wide-eyed as her mother plays. How wonderful to grow up surrounded by music! After church, we sang happy birthday to the oldest member, who just turned 90. There was a perfectly enormous cake, and people ate almost all of it. Finally the party broke up, and we succeeded in getting everything put away so we could go home.
Inspired by the expectation of Leave, I wrote one rather maudlin paragraph to get back into the rewrite of Angel Bait. Just jump in wherever you are, I said to myself.
