Mistletoe of Sleet
Jan. 28th, 2019 09:47 pmSnow arrived in the wee hours. It wasn't soft pretty flakes, but a constant sifting as if someone were shaking a rain of sugar out of the sky. The snow was light but grainy, easily blown by the wind. Luckily, it was easy to shovel, too, as there was six-plus inches of it by noon, when we decided to go out and clear away. It took about an hour for the two of us to do the driveway and walks, and clean off the car, and then shovel away the snow that fell off the car. We'll probably get a few more inches before this is over, but we thought it better to shovel by stages rather than wait for the whole thing to be through.
Last night I dreamed about aliens again, but this time they weren't monsters, but refugees from another world. They arrived in airships. They looked like humans, but their costumes were outmoded--from the 20s or 30s. I guess their study of how to fit in was somewhat flawed. The Sparrowhawk and I had chosen that day to take a hot-air balloon ride. It would be fun, he said. However, in addition to the arrival of the aliens, I looked through the spyglass provided and saw a meteor approaching. Of course, we would choose the day of a meteor strike to take a balloon ride. I started yelling "I want to go down!" The Sparrowhawk didn't understand my meteor warning, but he crash landed the balloon. We descended lightly among the alighting aliens, and were unhurt. I warned them to take cover in case of meteors, and then had to hurry back to my job. I was running a restaurant called Raven Bread that provided food for all regardless of ability to pay, and I figured the aliens would soon be needing something to eat.
I thought there was something in the Bible about this Raven Bread, and sure enough: 1 Kings 17:6. After angering the king as prophets are wont to do, Elijah the prophet is hiding out by a brook near the Jordan. God sends ravens to bring him food every day. My brain is full of many things, and my dreaming self rummages through them to its own specifications. Raven Bread would be an excellent name for some kind of hipster restaurant, if one were inclined to do restaurant start-ups--which I'm not!
I woke up with a feeling of happiness and excitement in spite of the gathering snow, because it was Tron's birthday today. What a happy event in the dead of winter! I went through old boxes of photos to find some good ones of her to post, and enjoyed pictures of all of us. OMG, I was so young and slender once upon a time!
