The Fimbulwinter is brooding in ice-blue magnificence right atop my home. Mail delivery is canceled. The governor has closed the state offices for the third day in a row. We wanted to go out and shovel the driveway again, but I poked my head out and decided it was just too cold. Everything is locked in stasis. A wind-smoothed blanket of white covers everything. My brain feels as if it's been stashed in the refrigerator in a sturdy plastic box labeled with masking tape on which is written in black marker: BRAIN 1/25/19. Perhaps it will be rediscovered and thawed in the spring.

I've caved to the weather to the point where I wrote both Deb and my siblings some email informing them that it could possibly happen that I will not make the trip tomorrow. We have a care conference scheduled for my mother, and the Sparrowhawk and I were going to stay with Deb and celebrate her birthday, which always comes just a week and two days after mine. Here's what my weather app has to say about that:

Dangerous Travel and Brutally Cold Temperatures Into Thursday
Dangerous travel will persist across much of West Michigan into Thursday. Expect snow showers with rapid changes to visibility (near zero at times), intense bursts of snow, gusty winds, and snow covered roads. Temperatures will be life-threatening to those caught outside, with wind chills tonight through Thursday morning between -20 and -40. Frostbite may occur in less than 15 minutes.

Honestly, my road courage is just about used up. If it's like this tomorrow, I'm not going. I feel terrible about not being there, but as Deb pointed out, "We can always celebrate being alive, we just have to stay alive to do it."

We finished "Half-Witch," and started on a re-read of "The Wind in the Willows." Last night we had come to the part where Mole gets lost in the Wild Wood, Rat comes to rescue him, and they both get lost--and then it snows! But all is not lost, because Mole trips over Badger's bootscraper, and they find a haven in Badger's snug den. It was the perfect episode for the evening.
