WillowGrouse of Sleet
Jan. 31st, 2019 10:04 pmWhen I got up this morning, the sky was blue for the first time in ages! I was tempted to revisit my decision and beat myself up for being too cowardly to get on the road. It had snowed several more inches. The weather people were still emphasizing the snowy and slippery condition of the roads. A serendipitous phone call from Deb helped. A lesser type of friend might have called to complain that I wasn't coming. But Deb is the very best kind of friend, and she called to make sure I wasn't even considering it. By the time the Sparrowhawk and I, through our joint efforts, had shoveled out the driveway and walks and cleaned off the car yet again, it was snowing some more, and I was ready to stay strong and stay home.
The funny thing is that I felt really peaceful and happy once I knew I wasn't going anywhere. I decided to take the day as a gift and enjoy it. We did have our own little adventure later in the day, when the Sparrowhawk unexpectedly announced that he felt like going to the bookstore and then eating out. Maybe the cabin fever was getting to him! Also, we had a 10% discount coupon from the bookstore that expired today. We got in the car and immediately discovered that the roads in town were MUCH worse even than we'd anticipated. Creeping along over bumpy, slippery ruts of ice, we made it to the bookstore, where we bought the much-coveted Earthsea compendium with illustrations by Charles Vess, and a copy of Time's Convert for me --though I felt a guilty twinge because the Nipper hates Matthew the vampire so much. I'm looking forward to it anyway.
I want to give a huge shout-out to the two unknown guys who pushed the car that was stuck on a hill on the way home, holding up a giant line of other cars, including us. I didn't get a chance to thank them in person, but I'm sending them all the love! They were so awesome--kind when it counts. Once we got up the hill, we had dinner at the local pub and I used my birthday BOGO coupon. We've turned our heat down to 64 degrees, pursuant to the governor's request. She's afraid the state will start having natural gas shortages before the cold eases. We always keep it at 66 anyway, and wear sweaters, so it's no hardship for us. And it certainly felt warm and cozy when we got back inside. It's so good to be together at home. This is the last day of Samhain, though it certainly doesn't feel like it! Tomorrow--Brighid's Day and the beginning of Imbolc!
