Sycamore of Leave
Oct. 6th, 2019 09:41 pmWe both went to church an hour and fifteen minutes early. The Sparrowhawk worked with a friend on setting up the coffee cart and everything else, and I helped until the other musicians arrived, and then rehearsed. It was just two flutes and me, no piano. We had our bass player, but honestly, he was on the other side of the flutes and I couldn't hear him most of the time, so not much help to me. We were playing three part English dances. Our fearless leader arrived late and in a bit of a scramble--she's been like that ever since her elderly mother came to live with her. We scrambled a bit in general and were occasionally hard pressed to keep in sync with each other. The music seems easy, but it's not, because the rhythms play against each other. You think you're playing parallel to someone and then all of sudden you're not. But we always came back together and the audience probably didn't notice our little bobbles. The double flute sound was a lot of fun, and our leader brought her bass flute and played that on some of the pieces. The sermon irritated me, as it often does, but I had my back to the pulpit, so ha ha. This is the benefit of being a musician. It helps me ignore the parts I'm supposed to be paying attention to, which are all things I really have no use for at my age. I love our minister, and I know she's doing her best, but I am just not her target audience.
Then I had to help clean up all the coffee stuff and take everything down again. The minister has a new idea that people should volunteer for set-up and clean-up instead of our previous schedule, which assigned the tasks to various groups in the church, one per month. I think this idea will not work for long, but I guess we'll see. There are supposed to be two people for set-up and two people for clean-up--DIFFERENT people. But today, there were two and a half total--the Sparrowhawk, our friend, and me, but I was only there half the time because of doing the music. That's a lot of work for just two people. The Sparrowhawk also brought the new order of service leaflets and inserted them, which he does at the beginning of every month. So he was tired and needed a nap. That was too much work. However, it all got done and with reasonable success. I look forward to not having to get up and hustle around tomorrow.
