It was a drab, chilly day, but not actually raining, so I finished raking the front yard and bagging the leaves. Tried again to read Story by Robert McKee, skipping his speechifying about the nature of stories and skipping ahead to the part about plot structure. So far, his prose seems pretentious to me, but what do I know. Tons of writers seem to love him.

I took a ride out to a western suburb with Vee who lives nearby--the one who went to the movies with us. Another friend who is in my supper group had proposed a meeting to talk about making mittens and hats to give away, so we were going to that. It was in the community room at her local library. She said she had lots of fleece fabric she needed to use up, and Vee also said she had tons of fleece in her basement. I don't have fleece, but thought maybe I could learn to make mittens and hats. Sadly, it was so not fun. A couple of other women were there, not people I feel a great affinity for. I suppose it doesn't hurt to get to know them better, but I suspect they will never really warm up to me because they just aren't that kind of people. The meeting was not what I would call well organized, and went on some time after I wanted to go home. I'm not happy about the project overall. I had envisioned the fleece as being thick and nice, but instead it's random scraps that seem kind of crappy to me. I don't believe in giving crappy things to the poor. If you're going to give them stuff, it should be the good stuff. But I will reserve judgment until I make some of these mittens I cut out and see how they are when finished. Not fun. Happy to come home and resume my reclusive existence.
